A good singer needs something more than an excellent voice, musicality, good charts and a willingness to work hard . They need a signature piece...something quirky but totally within their genre. A song or two that will be instantly recognizable to the public.
Within the first few bars of ‘New York’ New York’, most people instantly hear Frank Sinatra. There’s no faster way to establish a long career than to choose a song you can make your own. A tune that makes people immediately think your name and get the song stuck in their head. The longer the career, the more of these tunes you’ll have.
But right now it’s tough to make an old standard your own, there’s too much competition past and present. Instead we’d like to give you a selection of several possibilities that sound like standards but are new and available.
Carl Hammond holds a Ph.D. in composition from the University of Sydney, Australia. He has spent years playing, writing and scoring commericals, movies, and songs for the likes of Harry Connick Sr. as well as a musical under consideration for production in London.
